Review #19 - Krymzyn ¦ TOUR STOP!

About the Author; 

BC Powell is a fantasy author from Los Angeles, CA. "Krymzyn" is his debut science fiction fantasy novel, the first book in a series titled "The Journals of Krymzyn."

Powell has a diverse background, having held several creative positions in the entertainment industry, including executive roles at ABC-TV and Technicolour. In recent years, he's authored several non-fiction works, primarily educational books and training programs for trading the financial markets. He dual majored in journalism and philosophy at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Writing fiction has been his lifelong passion and goal. "Krymzyn" is his first published novel and represents, in his words, "finally finding the story I want to tell with characters that are able to bring that story to life." He's an avid reader and lists Ernest Hemingway, Frank L. Herbert, Stephen King, Jane Austen, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. as his favourite authors.

Brad, as he prefers to go by in personal communication, lives with his long time girlfriend, three sons from a previous marriage, and their rescue dog and cat. He enjoys hiking, ocean kayaking, spending time at Southern California beaches, movies, and reading.

My Review;

So, let's get the bad out of the way first, shall we? Just a couple of nitpicky points, that's all- there's quite a massive time skip. Something I am not a fan of, because I feel it makes the pacing slow (probably the opposite of the author's intention). And then at one point, early on, (chapter 5 or 6, I think) there was a gender swap of one of the Watches? Initially introduced as a man, and then referred to as a woman, but then a man again. I'm just assuming that was a typo, though, because there weren't any other errors like that.

So, let's get onto the good stuff!

The world building is very creative within Krymzyn. In particular, the fact that time as we see it does not exist specifically - there is just light and dark. There are no parents either - what a great world this must be!

(It's not all that great, though, because, you know, invasions of monsters and stuff. Not something I would be particularly fond of, as it so happens.)

I think my favourite part of the world building - or the species dwelling within, take your pick, though, is the hair colour. Everyone's hair becomes tinged with different coloured streaks depending on the duty that they are selected for. Red = Hunter, Green = Watcher, and so on. The golden light for fertility. It really adds to the Sci-Fi and Fantasy elements, in my opinion.

Over all, Krymzyn was an interesting read for me- I couldn't connect with the characters, not really, but they weren't dislikeable. They just weren't in my favour, that's all. Still, I think I'd like to give the sequel a go, even if this book didn't really do anything for me.

I liked it, because it was interesting, but it didn't do anything, and that's where I feel a little let down.
